APPENDIX I: CASUALTIES

This casualty list has been compiled from several sources:

The casualty list kept by the 9RTR Orderly Room

References in contemporary newsletters, letters, and diaries

Personal memories, relating both to the individual and to others.

The information presented is as accurate as possible using the sources mentioned and the occasional inconsistencies between those records.

The entries are in date order of occurrence, and within each date in alphabetical order.

The summary of casualties includes killed in action (KIA) and Died of wounds (DOW) under the same heading "Killed". Some of the casualties that have been included could more correctly be listed as died on active service, e.g.

Lt. Les Wintle, ran over by a tank transporter at St. Omer

Sgt. Ernie Bottoms, killed by a V2 in Antwerp

Cpl. John Davis, died as a result of injuries sustained after jumping out of a burning building in Roosendaal.

Another small number of injuries were caused by malfunction of armament, e.g. Besa blowback. All of these incidents have been included in the main casualty list.
